Fruit of the Trunk
The jaboticaba is a uniquely bizarre fruit
BY Brooke Rehmann
If you’re on the look out for a unique fruit, look no further than the jaboticaba. The tree flowers and fruits directly on the branches and trunks making it fantastically bizarre looking like it’s straight out of The Twilight Zone. When the slow-growing evergreen tree flowers, it looks like it is covered in snow. Also known as the Brazilian grapetree, the fruit is reminiscent of a slip-skin grape with thick purple skin, which is bitter and astringent. You should avoid eating the skin though, as too much of it can be harmful though they do have medicinal qualities.
Once you take a bite, you’ll notice a sweet-tasting gelatinous, light-colored flesh. Be careful of the seeds. These berries don’t last long once picked, only a few days, as they begin to ferment quickly. This short shelf life makes the fruit a perfect addition to jams, tarts, and even liqueurs. This unusual fruit is still unfamiliar to most locals, though it is gaining popularity for its yearlong growing season and interesting taste. You’re highly unlikely to stumble upon a wayward jaboticaba tree in your adventures, but you may find them at your local health food store or farmers market if the timing is right.
