Located about three miles north of Hāna, Waiʻānapanapa State Park is a gorgeous state park that attracts thousands of visitors annually and is famous for its black sand beach. For the nature lover’s, enjoy spectacular views of the rugged shoreline, sea stacks and blow holes, and explore ancient lava caves, a native hala forest, and heiau (religious temple). Camping, fishing, hiking, and picnicking are popular activities, but if you decide to go swimming, be careful. The ocean is very powerful, and there are no lifeguards on duty. One of the well-known and easy hiking trails is the 1.5-mile roundtrip Wai’ānapanapa Caves Trail that will take you through lava caves and forests. Pi’ilani Trail, or Ke Ala Loa o Māui Trail, is another popular hiking trail and takes you to the black sand beaches where you will see historic petroglyphs. Advanced reservations are required for all non-resident visitors.
