At the island’s westernmost tip, Ka‘ena Point feels disconnected from the pace and pattern of the rest of O‘ahu. There is no bustling highway, no streetlights, no rush — only sun, wind, sea, and a stillness that feels almost cosmic. Reaching it requires effort. The point is accessible only on foot or by mountain bike, about 2.5 miles one way from either trailhead. From Mokulē‘ia on the North Shore, the trail runs flat and sunny across sand dunes. From Keawa‘ula on the West Side, dry cliffs tower on one side while tide pools and bouldered beaches stretch out on the other. That section has been closed for storm repairs, so check the current status before setting out. Both trails end at a 59-acre reserve ringed by a predator-proof fence, where shearwaters burrow, albatrosses nest on open ground, and you might spot a monk seal hauled out on the sand. It is not just the end of the road. It is something else entirely.
