With Tofu Skin Method, Lynn Yee strips skin care back to three gentle essentials rooted in a family ritual

BY IJfke Ridgley

Honolulu-born makeup artist Lynn Yee’s long career in the beauty industry laid the groundwork for Tofu Skin Method, her simple but effective skin-care line. “As a makeup artist, I was constantly trying new products, and I needed something I could use no matter what to soothe and moisturize my skin,” says Yee, who has sensitive, eczema-prone skin. “I noticed skin care was confusing or too daunting for a lot of my friends and clients.” She was taught from a young age by her Chinese grandmother that skin care was a priority and a lifestyle. “It’s something consistent that we do every day and encompasses topical products, what we eat, what we wear, and how we feel,” says Yee. “It is a mindfulness for ourselves.” During the pandemic, when she could not take on makeup clients, Yee launched Tofu Skin Method. Inspired by her grandmother’s ritual, the core line consists of three products: Balancing Cleanser, which leaves skin clean but also moisturized; Restoring Hydrosol, which tones and hydrates with plants such as ‘ōlena (turmeric) sourced from ‘Ōlena Farms; and Nourishing Oil Elixir, a cold-pressed oil to lock in hydration. “Tofu Skin Method is very simple, transparent, and gentle,” she explains. “We only have essential products that are suitable for all skin types — very straightforward, and you can use them every day. We care about the health of your skin.”
