Fairmont Orchid sits on the Kohala Coast of Hawai‘i Island. In an effort to help protect the coral reefs that frame the property, the hotel has partnered with the ‘Āko‘ako‘a Reef Restoration Program. The initiative combines scientific research with traditional Hawaiian cultural practices to improve coastal ecosystems along West Hawai‘i’s 120-mile coastline, home to 35 species of coral. The state’s reefs face ongoing degradation from climate change, coastal pollution, and overfishing. Guests can experience the organization’s efforts to combat these threats firsthand with Fairmont Orchid’s new Pauoa Bay Snorkel Excursion, where they are guided to one of the reef nurseries in front of the hotel. Corals that have naturally detached during strong waves — and would otherwise die — are transported to ‘Āko‘ako‘a’s coral research and propagation facility in Kailua-Kona to breed, and the offspring are reintroduced to their native habitat in Pauoa Bay. “As stewards of Pauoa Bay, we embrace both the privilege and responsibility of protecting this vital ecosystem,” shares Michael Pye, Regional Vice President of Fairmont Hawai‘i. “With our commitment to this coral reef restoration program, we hope to preserve the cultural heritage and ecological significance of the bay and West Hawai‘i for future generations.” The resort’s complimentary quarterly Coral Chats, led by ‘Āko‘ako‘a representatives, explore the project’s impact on reef health and marine conservation.
